This is not an advertisement or a shameless corporate shill for Universal Studios, just a friendly reminder that Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, JAWS, is available for the first time on the Blu-ray format today. I don’t think I have to tell any of you geeks out there how historic and monumental JAWS is in terms of summer blockbuster entertainment. The bottom line is, without JAWS there may have never been a Star Wars or an Indiana Jones, or any of the superhero spectacles we flock to air-conditioned megaplexes to experience.

This JAWS Blu-ray is also quite special, because it’s been fully restored from the original negative, which went through an intensive cleaning process, then given a retina-shattering 4K digital scan. All of this was supervised and approved by Spielberg himself, so this home video release of JAWS is the most accurate presentation of the director’s vision we will probably ever have.  Here’s a trailer and the staggering list of bonus features that finally includes the long-awaited documentary The Shark is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of JAWS.

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.

Jaws: you might love it or you might hate it but it is a great film and way ahead of it’s time in my opinion. It was released in movie theaters seven years before I was born but even when I got to see it for the first time in the late 80’s, people still talked about it as if it was new. My kids hadn’t seen Jaws so we decided to rent it through Blockbuster @ Home. A Dish co-worker was telling me about the movies, games and TV shows you can get by mail so I tried it out. The movie was here in just a few days and all I had to do was stick it back in the mail. Jaws is a fantastic movie and if it doesn’t scare you it will at least make you think twice before you get in the water. The kids thought I was joking when I told them that we were that scared back then and laughed hysterically. I just shrugged it off. I can’t wait to buy the Blu-ray for the beautiful picture, all the extras and the original theatrical trailer.
