It seems as if Hugh Laurie has grown weary of being an asshole, as the British star of TV’s long-running HOUSE has dropped out of MGM’s Robocop remake, according to a tweet by Variety’s Jeff Sneider. The film, which will be directed by José Padilha (Elite Squad), still has Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jennifer Ehle, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, Michael K. Williams, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste in the cast.

Hugh played a cranky bastard that was horrible to everyone around him for what seemed like twenty straight years on HOUSE, so can you blame the guy if he doesn’t want to be a complete dick anymore? I hear Hugh is eyeing a role as the mayor of CandyLand, where he will spend the entire running time smiling, wearing a suit made of brightly colored gumdrops, petting puppies, and patting children on the head and giving them lollipops.

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.
