I am going to be calm and rational about this news, and oh…to hell with it…

YES!!!! OH MOTHER FRACKING!!! YES!!!! THERE IS GOING BE A S.H.I.E.L.D. TELEVISION SHOW PILOT WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY OUR LORD AND MASTER JOSS WHEDON!!!! GEEKGASMS OF ECSTASY FOR ALL!!!! MY PANTS ARE EXPLODING WITH DELIGHT!!! YESSSSSS!!!!! GLORY BE TO WHEDON!!! ALL SHALL WORSHIP HIM AND DESPAIR!!!!!!!

*ahem*

Ok, I think it’s all out of my system now. Anyway, yes, the S.H.I.E.L.D TV show is happening, according to a Deadline story posted just minutes ago. Joss and his brother Jed Whedon are writing the pilot along with Maurissa Tancharoen, and Joss will get behind the cameras for the first time since Dollhouse to direct the pilot for ABC. Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell, and Marvel writer Jeph Loeb are the executive producers of the show, which will begin production immediately.

There is no word on who will be in the pilot, but we can probably rule out Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers), due to her role on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother (a show that should’ve had a bullet put in it years ago), and Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), since he *SPOILER* is mostly dead. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Samuel L. Jackson show up as Nick Fury in the pilot to introduce us to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that will function as the protagonists of the series.

Holy crap, this is just such amazing news that my brain is spinning with possibilities. I’m so giddy that I can barely focus on writing this! We could see dozens of mid-tier Marvel Comics characters show up each week, adding key pieces to the rich tapestry that the Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe is becoming. Events that occur in the Marvel heroes’ films could be felt in the series and vice versa, creating a seamless, highly rewarding narrative for fans who follow the characters on the big and small screens. More on this amazing news to come. Damn it’s good to be a geek these days…

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.

Mid-tier Marvel character guest stars? It will never happen. On a TV budget, they will be like Thor and Daredevil in the Hulk TV series. Knowing network television, this will be a slightly sci-fi procedural (like a Fringe, but will probably fall along the lines of NCIS, etc.). My money is that it doesn’t make it out of season 2… maybe not season 1.

      Six seasons and a movie!

Interesting idea for a television. Here’s hoping we see lots of guest spots by Samuel L. Jackson.
