Next Summer, Roland Emmerich’s loud, dumb, shamelessly patriotic alien blow ‘em up blockbuster Independence Day, will be re-released into theaters (in post-converted 3D, of course). After that, Emmerich and FOX  will unleash not one, but two Independence Day sequels, titled ID Forever Part I, and ID Forever Part II. I’m utterly astonished they didn’t go with the far more cutesy and slang ”ID4-EVER.” The kids would dig it, yo.

Emmerich’s ID4 writing partner Dean Devlin recently spoke to Total Film about what made the 1996 summer popcorn flick so great:

“The thing that really hit me about the movie is how much love there is in it: between the characters; that the filmmakers had making it; that the cast had for each other. As we’re approaching a sequel we’re focusing on that aspect of it. Because I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable.”

Yes Dean, clearly it was the fact that the characters all loved each other so much. Riiiight. The film’s success had absolutely nothing to do with every monument and recognizeable building on Earth getting blown to smithereens by giant alien lasers, or the spectacular aerial dogfights between Air Force fighter jets and a billion alien spaceships, Will Smith punching aliens and saying, “Welcome to EARFF,” or the single greatest motivational speech in film history. Nope, it was totally the love, guys.

By the way, here’s that speech I mentioned. BEST. SPEECH. EVER.

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.
