Fans of Joss Whedon and the Marvel characters he oversees are extremely excited to see what’s in store for them on the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series that is currently in the pilot stage at ABC. However, if they are expecting to see characters from the films like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, or Cobie Smulder’s Maria Hill, they’re going to be out of luck. According to Whedon himself, the series will focus more on people like that guy who got busted by Tony Stark playing Galaga on the bridge of the heli-carrier:

“It’s new characters. It needs to be its own thing. It needs to be adjacent [to the movies]; you don’t want to do a show where you’re constantly going, ‘Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.’ You want them to do their own thing.”

And just what is that thing? Playing classic video games while the superheroes around you do the heavy lifting?

“Well, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. have that the other superheroes don’t? And that, to me, is that they’re not superheroes. But they live in that universe. Even though they’re a big organization, that [lack of powers] makes them underdogs, and that’s interesting to me.”

Whether the show focuses on “Galaga Guy” or not, I trust Joss and this news really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. I just hope the series gives us Marvel junkies lots of little easter eggs from the comics, and introduces third or fourth-tier Marvel characters and villains each week. I’d love to see bad guys like Klaw or the Taskmaster show up, or now that Marvel has the rights to Daredevil back, maybe The Kingpin could be a major player in the show, or Foggy Nelson could show up in courtroom scenes. The possibilites are endless.

There’s one thing I’m wondering about the show — will they get to use the SHIELD heli-carrier bridge set from The Avengers movie? Since Marvel Studios, ABC, and Disney are essentially all one entity, it’s entirely possible that this set is still standing and available for use in various Marvel-related projects, no? Having use of this set would certainly be advantageous to the production, especially from a budgetary standpoint.

In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.
