Sad news for Spider-man fans today (no, Kirsten Dunst is not coming back to play Mary Jane), as Marvel Comics revealed that issue #700 of the flagship Spider-man comic, Amazing Spider-man will be its last. The issue, which will hit stands in December, will be a massive 104 page, 50th anniversary special with a story by Dan Slott and artwork by Humberto Ramos.

50 years? 700 issues? Wow, I am feeling so incredibly ancient right now.

In any event, I wouldn’t be too misty about this whole thing. I’m sure Marvel will relaunch the title as part of the MARVEL NOW “initiative,” with a brand new #1 issue sometime in the winter of 2013. Then, when Marvel decides MARVEL NOW is so MARVEL YESTERDAY (ha ha, aren’t I clever?), they’ll revert the numbering back to the 700′s. Here are the all the variant covers for this incredible milestone:

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.

Wow. The collage of all the art to make Spidey’s eye is my fave.
