HACK DIRECTOR LEN WISEMAN TO HELM ‘MUMMY’ REBOOT
Len Wiseman, best known for being balls deep in Kate Beckinsale every night directing the Underworld movie series, is in final negotations to reboot The Mummy franchise for Universal. Deadline ran the news about Wiseman landing the gig, also reporting that Jonathan Spaiths (one of the maligned Prometheus writers) is penning the screenplay, with the whole shebang produced by that dynamic duo of Hollywood hackery, Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman, who also have a reboot of Van Helsing in the pipeline with Tom Cruise attached.
You know, I was almost ready to dub Len Wiseman the new Brett Ratner, but then I realized that Wiseman never single-handedly destroyed a beloved film franchise like Ratner did, he just lazily cranks out by-the-numbers action dreck then goes home and bangs the star of that by-the-numbers-dreck (can’t really fault him for that, though). I’m not afraid to admit that I find the 1999 Mummy with Brendan Frasier to be a ridiculously fun and underrated adventure flick, but the remainder of that franchise was a steaming pile and instead of trying to return The Mummy to its classic Universal horror-movie roots, it looks as if it’s just going to be more cookie-cutter nonsense filled with garish CGI (and knowing Wiseman, a blue tint over everything).
