SECOND ‘LIFE OF PI’ TRAILER SURE IS PURTY
Those of us who haven’t read the novel Life of Pi have been mystified by the trailer for the film adaptation by director Ang Lee. We saw a shipwreck, and a boy getting trapped on a lifeboat with a tiger, but we weren’t given any context for it. Well, thanks to this second stunningly gorgeous trailer, we now know that the young man’s family owned a zoo, and they were transporting all of their animals to a new location across the ocean. So I guess this film is kind of like a Bollywood version of We Bought A Zoo minus Scarlett Johansson’s hotness and Cameron Crowe’s unabashed schmaltz. (Although, this trailer does feature a friggin’ Coldplay song.)
Anyway, the film’s visuals continue to look magnificent, and at the very least, Life of Pi will be a stunning achievement in cinematography. If the story rises above a simple, saccharine “life and nature sure are swell, ain’t they?” moral, then Ang Lee could have something truly special here. Life of Pi debuts at the New York Film Festival this Friday, and goes wide on November 21.
