SIR PATRICK STEWART WILL PLAY PROFESSOR X AGAIN

The fairly major Montreal Comic-Con wrapped up recently, and one of the premiere guests was Captain Jean Luc Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart. During his Q&A panel, someone stepped up to be “that guy,” and asked him the obvious question — “Will you ever play Professor Xavier again?” To which the esteemed actor gave a sly smile and replied:

“I think there is every possibility. Yes, I will be reprising.”

The question is, when and where will the professor return? His atoms were scattered into oblivion by Jean Grey in that catastrophe X-Men 3: The Last Stand, but his “spirital essense” or whatever you want to call it transferred itself into the body of an elderly coma patient under the care of Dr. Moira McTaggert. Thankfully, all of that nonsense seems to have been ret-conned by the superb X-Men: First Class, and since the sequel to First Class will be an adaptation of Days of Future Past, we could easily see Stewart back during the “future sentinel prison camps” section of that legendary X-Men tale.

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.

I’m really not sure how you could say First Class was ‘superb’ when it shit all over the continuity of its own movie franchise, and the comics.

@facebook-1408699618:disqus I can say that because it’s a well-made film that was entertaining and stylish. Michael Fassbender was a brilliant young Magneto, as was McAvoy as Xavier. I bought into their relationship and enjoyed the combination of Nazi–hunting revenge flick, James Bond-esque 60′s spy thriller, and silver age superhero spectacle.

One of the most glaring problems in fandom are people who can’t accept that films are separate entities, and therefore aren’t required to be slavishly devoted to their convoluted canon. Films need to tell a story in two hours, and as long as they remain true to the spirit of the source material, they don’t need to be beholden to 50 + years of continuity.

Complaining that it doesn’t stay within the canon of the first films is a silly argument. Have the comics ever stayed true to the original story? Have the characters aged? Storylines NEVER retconned? No, the comics retcon stuff all the time, so no need to be picky on First Class. It was the 2nd best Xmen film after X2. No contest.

Shitting all over X-Men 3: The Last Stand is a noble act. Shitting on a movie that shat on the entire franchise, and the comics, gets my applause every time. Have you seen that movie?
