NEW ‘LONE RANGER’ IMAGES RANGE FROM BIZARRE TO BEAUTIFUL
USA Today ran a piece this morning about director Gore Verbinksi’s upcoming Lone Ranger film, which re-teams him with his Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp, who plays the Lone Ranger’s Comanche sidekick Tonto. The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer dons the trademark white hat and black mask as John Reid, aka The Lone Ranger, alongside Tom Wilkinson, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and William Fichtner in supporting roles. The film will be released on July 3, 2013.
While Johnny Depp’s insane Comanche crow getup still looks utterly batshit (apparently he even helped design it), the rest of these images are absolutely breathtaking. Verbinski is a director who really knows how to make use of environments and scenery, as these gorgeous western vistas demonstrate. At the very least, this Lone Ranger film is going to have an epic sense of scope with some truly beautiful and iconic imagery.
The only thing that really concerns me now is the screenplay. Early reports had the story told from Tonto’s point of view, and painted the Lone Ranger as an oafish, blunt instrument; a sort of walking parody of a classic American western hero. That version of the script also apparently had Tonto and the Lone Ranger battling werewolves, before Disney slashed the budget and went back to the drawing board. Yeesh.
Here are some of the pics. Check out the rest at USA Today:
