The website TV Line obtained a possible casting list for the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, which will take place in the same cinematic universe as The Avengers, and will be written and directed by Joss Whedon. Here’s a breakdown of the potential SHIELD agents we’ll see try to save the world each week.

SKYE: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE: Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

*SIGH* You have no idea how much it upsets me that “AGENT PHIL COULSON” doesn’t appear on this list. *sob* RIP, Phil. In all seriousness, it doesn’t matter who the SHIELD agents are in this TV show, what matters is who they interact with. If these people are just busting organized crime syndicates and high-tech bank robbers, it’s going to get old real quick and become just another police procedural (something Joss Whedon would never let happen).

As I’ve said before in previous articles, What I’m hoping for is that the SHIELD agents get to interact with third or fourth-tier Marvel supporting characters and villains; the ones that don’t have a shot of making it into any of the big-budget Marvel Studios films. Seeing characters like Jessica Jones/Alias, Rick Jones, or villains like A.I.M., or The Hand ninja clan would open up the world SHIELD inhabits and add more color and vibrancy to the already magnificent tapestry that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This must happen, if for no other reason than it may be the only way we’ll ever get to see a live-action Batroc ze Leaper!

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.
