Variety is reporting that The Descendants star Shailene Woodley is “in early talks” with Sony to play Mary Jane Watson in the sequel to Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-man. Mary Jane is the fiery redhead that Peter Parker falls in love with and eventually marries in the Marvel comic books

My first impressions? Sony is a bunch of pedophiles! Seriously, how old is this girl? She looks 13 years old for Cripes sake! [checks IMDb] She’s 20? Well, okay, but jeepers this girl looks young for her age. Fresh-faced is the understatement of the year in her case. Well, I haven’t seen The Descendants, so I can’t comment on her acting ability, but doesn’t she have that kinda generic, squeaky-clean, High School Musical vibe going on? I can’t see her pulling off Mary Jane. At any rate, I’d cast Bokeem Woodbine as Mary Jane before Kirsten Dunst again. Ugh.

The same Variety story also claims Sony is casting for Peter Parker’s best friend Harry Osborn (played by James Franco in the Sam Raimi movies) and is considering using Electro as the primary antagonist in the sequel. If you’re not familiar with that particular villain, he’s a power line worker who got zapped by a billion volts of electricity while working on the lines, but survived and gained the ability to absorb and shoot electricity. He also has one of the greatest costumes of all-time:

Oh, you better translate that mask EXACTLY or there will be blood, Marc Webb. There will be blood.

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.

They could also try making Electro’s costume look similar to the costume design they used in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.
