In an effort to sell more variant “New 52″ action figures push the boundaries of creativity, DC Comics is putting Superman in yet another new costume when Action Comics hits #18 in March. The new costume looks to be a “kewl modern updating!” of the black and silver ”regeneration matrix” costume Supes sported after being killed by Doomsday. (And let’s not forget the awesome power mullet the regeneration chamber gave him, either.) The changes stem from a new creative team coming onboard the flagship Superman title – artist Tony Daniel and writer Andy Diggle, who said:

I’ve always had a positive experience working with DC Comics, and it’s amazing to be welcomed back into the fold in such fine style. Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best – and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.”

Yes Mr. Diggle, Superman is iconic. When he looks like this:

Look, I don’t mean to sound like an old fogey here; an ancient curmudgeonly nerd who poo-poos every change that comes down the pike, but I believe that there are certain things in this universe that you should never mess with — Superman’s costume is one of them. To me it’s like replacing the Statue of Liberty’s crown with a trucker cap, then dumping thousands of gallons of glue and glitter all over her robes. More often than not, these ridiculous costume changes are born out of desperation; an inability of the writers to tell compelling Superman stories, forcing them to resort to gimmckry that never, ever lasts. Case in point:

I think I’ve proved my point. Here’s Tony Daniel’s promo art for his upcoming Action run:

Jeff is the defining voice of his generation. Sadly, that generation exists only in an alternate dimension where George Lucas became supreme overlord of the Earth in 1979 and replaced every television broadcast and theatrical film on the planet with Star Wars and Godzilla movies. In this dimension, he’s just a guy from New England who likes writing snarky things about superheroes, monsters, and robots.
