MARK MILLAR WANTS FOX’S MARVEL CHARACTERS AND DISNEY’S MARVEL CHARACTERS TO LIVE IN ONE SHINY, HAPPY WORLD
20th Century Fox made headlines recently by hiring polarizing and controversial Marvel Comics creator Mark Millar to be the creative “overseer” of their Marvel film properties, which consists of the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises. Fans of the Marvel universe in print form have loudly voiced their opinions that the movie characters should inhabit the same universe, but since Fox owns the rights to the two properties mentioned above, Sony owns Spider-man, and Marvel Studios/Disney owns the Avengers characters, that’s an impossibility. But, According to Millar in a Blastr interview, just because the superheroes are scattered over different film studios, doesn’t mean that efforts couldn’t be made to make it seem like everything is happening in the same world:
“I don’t think it’s something anyone would want to rush into. Following that Marvel model, we want to establish things first. If you had a Fantastic Four relaunch, and Wolverine and the X-Men were in it, I think it would distract you from the Fantastic Four. You can make people aware that they’re existing in the same universe without making it a big crossover movie but it would be an injustice to the Fantastic Four not to make their first movie all about them.”
Right on, Mark. This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping he’d do upon getting this gig — immediately attempt to broker the peace between the different studios so that sometime down the line, they could be open to a profit and distribution split, and we could see the X-Men fighting alongside Spider-man, The Fantastic Four, and The Avengers in a blockbuster superhero epic the likes of which has never been seen. Of course, this is all just Millar’s personal wish; there’s no guarantee Fox is going to go for it at all. In fact, they could laugh in Millar’s face and tell him to hit the bricks and go back to writing his little “funny books.” We’ll have to wait and see.
