Actor Lee Pace, last seen as the smarmy elven douche King Thranduil in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has joined the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy according to a report from The Wrap. Although Marvel is keeping the identity of Pace’s character a secret, they did reveal that he will play the villain of the film.

If you’ll recall, Pace was one of the many actors to audition for the role of the Guardians’ team leader Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. The part ultimately went to Parks & Rec star Chris Pratt, but director James Gunn and crew must have been very impressed with Pace during the audition process if they brought him back to play the flick’s antagonist.

So, who is the mystery villain Pace will play in the film? Early word had Thanos making an appearance in the film, chasing after the Guardians, who had a certain cosmic artifact the big purple brute wanted. But early speculation online pegs Pace as Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector — a longtime pain in the ass for The Avengers and many other cosmic Marvel characters. The Collector likes to collect things (duh) —  usually rare alien creatures and artifacts of vast cosmic power, so it would make sense if he had a certain gauntlet with certain gems in it that could grant its wearer God-like powers. Perhaps the Guardians piss The Collector off by stealing the Infinity Gauntlet from him, launching an epic chase across the stars?

Could be amazing…as long as Pace wears a shock-white fright wig and that giant collar….
